What Does Autism Look Like

NOTALLDISABILITIES

This is one of my HUGE pet peeves! So today I took Sammie for an evaluation at a company for piano lessons…The owner was really nice and sweet, however I a felt like my head was going to explode when she made the statement “well he looks just fine! You can’t tell there’s anything wrong”. Well let’s talk about what’s wrong with this statement on a thousand levels!

FIRST OF ALL…..He doesn’t LOOK  like something is wrong with him because……THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH HIM!  I don’t understand why people think all disabilities require a wheel chair.  Having a disability does not equate to something n=being “WRONG”.   I am not sure if she thought that was a compliment or what BUT I do know that a diagnosis of Autism does not signify you are broken or that your life is over.  I always say “Autism is a diagnosis NOT a death sentence.”

What would have been a better statement…….

Maybe she could have said…….

“Wow!  You all are doing a great job helping him cope”

Because thats what happens when you have a child with Autism…you learn to cope with or ovecome the challenges.  We have our good days and bad days just like everyone else but I have learned how to focus on the positive.  I truly believe what you focus on is what you get more of.  I am not knocking anyone else for how they handle their day to day with Autism,

I am sharing what works for my family.

Or maybe she should have done some research before opening her mouth!

I must say if you are ignorant on a subject matter sometimes it’s best not to say anything at all!  Look I’m not here to pass judgment however be careful how you approach people. And especially be careful of the words and tone you have when discussing folks children!
